Chuam Chotdaebawi:
Korea's Iconic Candle Rock and Historical Pavilion
Located in Donghae City, Chuam Chotdaebawi (Candle Rock) is celebrated as one of the most scenic spots in South Korea. It is so famous that its sunrise silhouette is often featured in the opening of the Korean national anthem broadcast. As a Class 1 certified drone pilot based in Gangneung, I captured these frames to showcase the stunning harmony between the limestone cliffs and the emerald East Sea.
1. The Legend of the Candle Rock
The Candle Rock earns its name from its vertical, slender shape that resembles a lit candle. Geological forces and thousands of years of wave erosion have created this limestone masterpiece. According to local folklore, a man who lived here was turned into this stone pillar after grieving the loss of his wives.
The surrounding area is called Neungpa-dae, often described as a "Stone Forest." The sharp, jagged rocks rising from the crystal-clear water provide a dramatic contrast that is best appreciated from a high-altitude drone perspective.
2. Haeamjeong Pavilion: A Glimpse into Goryeo History
Tucked away behind the coastal cliffs is Haeamjeong, a historic pavilion originally built in 1361 during the Goryeo Dynasty. It was used by scholars as a retreat to admire the sea and find inspiration for their poetry. The pavilion’s traditional architecture, with its elegant tiled roof, remains remarkably preserved against the backdrop of ancient pine trees.
3. Aerial Symmetry and Coastal Beauty
The symmetry between the man-made walkways and the raw, unyielding limestone rocks makes Chuam a favorite spot for professional cinematography. Whether it's the Chuam Suspension Bridge nearby or the winding coastal paths, every angle offers a new discovery.
