Ulleungdo Haengnam Walk: A Scenic Seaside Trail in Korea

Ulleungdo Haengnam Coastal Walk: The Ultimate Guide from Seoul

How to get to the "Mysterious Island" and its most beautiful trail

For global travelers visiting Seoul, a trip to Ulleungdo Island is the highlight of their Korean journey. Known as the "Emerald of the East Sea," Ulleungdo offers the Haengnam Coastal Walk, a stunning path connecting Dodong and Jeodong ports. In this guide, we will cover everything from how to travel from Seoul to the island, to the best photography spots along the trail.

🚢 How to Get to Ulleungdo from Seoul

Currently, Ulleungdo is only accessible by ferry. For those living in or visiting Seoul, there are four main ports you can use. Since most ferries depart in the morning, dedicated shuttle buses from Seoul are the most convenient option.
Departure Port Arrival Port Duration (Ferry) Key Tip for Seoul Travelers
Pohang Dodong ~3.5 hrs Fastest route directly to Dodong (Closest to the trail).
Gangneung Jeodong ~3 hrs Closest port to Seoul by distance.
Mukho Dodong/Sadong ~2.5 hrs Shortest ferry time from the mainland.
Hupo Sadong ~4.5 hrs Large Cruise ships (Sunflower Cruise) - Best for motion sickness.

🚌 Recommended: Shuttle Bus from Seoul

Most travelers use dedicated shuttle buses that depart from Yeongdeungpo, City Hall, or Jamsil at around 3:00~4:00 AM. These buses are timed perfectly with ferry departures. You can book these through Ulleungdo-specialized travel agencies like Hanaro Tour or Seoul Dure Tour.

1. Volcanic Geological Wonders

The Haengnam Coastal Walk is essentially a living museum of volcanic history. From a drone's view, the scale of these cliffs is truly humbling, showing the immense power of the East Sea hitting the base of the island.

2. The Trekking Course

The path is about 2.6 km long. Starting from Dodong Port, you'll walk through sea caves and over spiral stairs. It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to finish the course while enjoying the scenic views.

🎒 Traveler's Essential Tips

  • 📍 Finding the Entrance: At Dodong Port, face the sea and walk to the left. You will see the "Haengnam Coastal Walk" sign.
  • 👞 Footwear: Wear sturdy sneakers! The metallic stairs can be slippery.
  • 💧 No Shops: There are no stores on the trail. Buy water at the port before you start.
  • 📸 Photo Spot: Don't miss the Haengnam Lighthouse for the best panoramic shots.

3. Aerial Perspective: Nature's Art

For drone enthusiasts, the spiral stairs lead down to sea caves, offering incredible geometric lines for photography.

4. Crystal Clear Emerald Waters

The clarity of the water is unmatched. Even from 100m high, underwater reefs are visible. Truly a hidden gem of Korea!

Where to Eat in Okinawa: 7 Food Stops I Actually Loved

Okinawa has plenty of famous food spots, but not every place actually feels worth your time once you get there. These were the food stops that stood out to me during the trip, from mazemen in Naha to cheap conveyor-belt sushi in Chatan and taco rice near the airport. Some places were planned, some were accidental, and a few were so good that I would happily go back. Quick note before you go This post mixes small local spots and well-known chains . For some independent restaurants, a live official menu was not clearly published online, so I used a current price guide instead of pretending every exact menu number was fixed. For chains and official facility-linked stores, I used the latest details I could verify. 1) Mazemen Mahoroba in Naha I originally wanted to eat at the very popular Danbo ramen, but the line was too long, so I gave up and came here instead. That turned out to be a very good decis...
